“Sour Times” was released by Portishead as a single in August 1994. The song was also on their debut album, Dummy, which came out the same year. The song sounds just like the title suggests. It has a very melancholic gloom to it. Even the music video is made of footage taken from the group’s short film, To Kill a Dead Man. The Civil Wars covered the song over a decade later, and when they did it, they made it sound kind of epic and surely a bit more energetic. Confused? Listen and understand.
