As reported by the Milwaukee Neighborhood News Service, children who live near the Northside YMCA now have a new place to play, thanks to The Brewers Community Foundation and KaBOOM!, a national nonprofit that partners with communities to build playgrounds. The new playground at 13th and North was designed by the neighborhood kids and built with help from 200 volunteers, including Brewers wives and people from the neighborhood.

Police officers that have been stationed full-time at six Milwaukee high schools to help curb violence and nurture better relations with students will be removed this coming school year under a plan from Superintendent Gregory Thornton. Instead, officers would visit other middle and high schools during dedicated hours that would extend into the evening.

Milwaukee Public School board voted 8-0 to use the vacant Malcolm X Academy building as a community center offering services to the surrounding neighborhood, denying an offer by St. Marcus Lutheran School to buy and convert it into a second campus. The Community Center plan includes hosting education, cultural and recreational programs.

Bradley Manning was sentenced yesterday to 35 years in prison for giving hundreds of thousands of secret military and diplomatic documents to WikiLeaks in one of the biggest leak cases in the U.S. since the Pentagon Papers a generation ago. With good behavior and timed already served, he could be out in 6 1/2 years.
