As reported by the MBJ: The long-delayed reconstruction of the boarding area in Milwaukee's downtown train station will begin in early summer as the state seeks a company to manage the project. The $15 million project will bring the Milwaukee Intermodal Station boarding area up to Americans with Disabilities Act standards. Construction is expected to start after May 2014.
In business news, JC Penney Co. Inc will close five Wisconsin stores that are among 33 underperforming stores nationwide, eliminating 2,000 jobs. Stores in Fond du Lac, Janesville, Rhinelander, Rice Lake and Wausau will close by early May.
Federal officials approved a new downtown Milwaukee streetcar route intended to move tracks away from underground utilities along North Broadway. The change eliminates $10 million in construction costs to move underground AT&T communication lines and 2,000 feet of steam tunnels and electrical ducts.
Under a plan to be reviewed next week by a County Board committee, Mitchell International Airport could be fitted with rows of solar panels to help pay the airport's energy costs. The idea is based on solar farms set up by government in other states and modeled after a similar system at the Indianapolis Airport. For more on this story, head here.
