Arena Football League Commissioner Jerry B Kurz announced at a press conference on Wednesday that the Milwaukee Mustangs have been purchased and will relocate to Portland, Oregon. The Mustangs, formerly the Iron, will begin regular season play in 2014 at the Moda Center, home of the NBA's Portland Trail Blazers.

The freshman class at the University of Wisconsin-Madison this fall is the largest in school history and includes the most WI residents in 12 years. UW-Milwaukee, for the third year in a row is reporting both smaller total enrollment and smaller freshman class, a drop of about 1,300 students that's expected to cost the university $10.8 million in lost tuition and fees.

The state Department of Natural Resources on Wednesday refused a directive from the National Park Service to close several popular state properties because of the federal government shutdown. State officials opted to keep Kettle Moraine, Devil's Lake and the state owned portion of the Horicon Marsh open because a bulk of money used to fund the parks comes from the state, not the federal government.

Sarah Berndt, a ninth-grade Spanish and introductory international baccalaureate class teacher at Milwaukee's Ronald Reagan College Preparatory High School, has been awarded a prestigious national teaching award. Berndt was one of 40 educators in the country to receive The Milken Educator award, which comes with a cash prize of $25,000.
