Stalled negotiations between WTMJ-TV/Channel 4 and Time Warner Cable over service fees resulted in Time Warner blacking out the channel on their cable service. The two sides are engaged in a dispute over fees paid to WTMJ, owned by Journal Broadcast Group, by Time Warner to allow it to retransmit the stations' programming. Last year WISN-TV/Channel 12 was blacked out on Time Warner Cable for a week in a similar dispute.
Long-term agreements on the operation and public support for the War Memorial Center and Milwaukee Art Museum won the unanimous backing of the County Board Thursday. The board approved 18-0 $1.6 million in annual guaranteed county aid for the next 10 years.
This week marked the debut of Milwaukee Latino Carnaval, intended to showcase the city's diverse Latino community. The week-long celebration ends on Saturday with the carnaval's grand parade. Starting at 11am at the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce at 10th and National, the parade features Queen of the Carnival, Maria Monreal-Cameron, outgoing president and CEO of the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and representation from 17 Latin countries. Milwaukee restaurateur Mike Eitel was approved a lease for an outdoor World Cup festival in the Park East next year. The festival plans to take over a five acre block west of the Milwaukee river between West McKinley and West Juneau avenues just north of downtown. It would include outdoor food vendors, bars, screens displaying World Cup matches and three outdoor courts for fustal games, a variation on soccer played on a smaller area. The festival would run from June into early July next year in conjunction with the 2013 World Cup.
