The Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District purchased 59 acres on the east bank of the Milwaukee River in northern Washington County this month as a part of its regional flood management program known as Greenseams. The parcel is a mix of wooded floodplain, with ash and silver maple trees, and low-lying grassland. Greenseams has protected nearly 2,700 acres of floodplains and wetlands in Milwaukee, Ozaukee, Washington and Waukesha counties since it was established in 2001.
Another deadly blast has struck the Russian city of Volgograd, killing at least 14 people on a public trollybus near a busy market during morning rush hour on Monday. No one claimed responsibility for the explosions, but they come several months after the leader of a Chechen separatist group pledged violence to disrupt the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics.
Starting Jan 1st, minimum wage workers in 13 states and four cities will see higher paychecks. While most increases amount to less than 15 cents per hour, workers in New Jersey, Connecticut, New York and Rhode Island will see a bigger bump. Currently 19 states have minimum wages set higher than the federal level of $7.25 per hour.
The Jewish Museum Milwaukee is hosting a display of large silkscreen portraits by Andy Warhol. The exhibition, "Ten Portraits of Jews of the Twentieth Century" will be on display through March 2014. Info found here.
