A yearlong state DNR probe into illegal ginseng harvesting has generated more than 100 citations for violations in the last 6 years. Ginseng, believed to possess medicinal qualities that can help with a variety of health issues, takes years to mature in the wild and has been harvested to near-extinction in China. It is illegal to harvest ginseng from national parks, and WI requires diggers to obtain a license to harvest the plants. A pound of dried roots is going for between $800 and $850 this year.
