Super Typhoon Haiyan, one of the strongest storms in history, hit the Philippines Friday morning. With winds gusts as strong as 235 miles per hour, the storm ripped roofs off of houses and downed power lines as more than 100,000 people took shelter in evacuation centers.

Area residents are asked to join "BloodCenter's Community 1,000", an effort to see 1,000 additional blood donors by Sunday, November 24th. There is a particular need for O-negative type blood, but all blood is needed. To schedule an appointment or for more info, go online www.bcw.edu.

Veterans, family members and the community are invited Monday to the Milwaukee VA for a 10:30am Veterans Day ceremony in the hospital chapel, 5000 West National Avenue. American Legion Post 416 will present the colors, perform the invocation, military medley and a rifle volley. For more information, call Denise Jashinsky at 414-384-2000, ext. 45338.

As reported by the MBJ: Talgo Inc, the company hired in 2009 to build new trains to serve on the Amtrak Hiawatha route between Milwaukee and Chicago, filed a $65.9 million claim against the state of Wisconsin.  Ongoing contract debates began once Gov. Scott Walker canceled a high-speed rail project between Milwaukee and Madison that would have resulted in Talgo building two more trains for the state.
