Exhibitions of his stunning cut paper sculptures in New York, Texas, North Carolina, Oregon, California and Wisconsin have won Madison-based paper artist Michael Velliquette a national reputation. His low-relief, cut constructions begin with hand-painted heavyweight watercolor paper. He then paints the paper with a mix of inks and acrylic paints to achieve a richness of depth and color saturation. The individual paper elements are then hand-cut and glued in successive layers, creating a complex interaction of texture and dimensionality.
