Japanese automakers Honda, Nissan, Toyota and Mazda are recalling around 3.4 million cars due to airbag defects. Most of the recalled cars appeared to be from the 2001, 2002 and 2003 model years. It's possible that the passenger front airbag inflators may deploy with too much pressure, causing the casing to rupture and could result in injury. Although there are reports of airbag malfunctions, no injuries or deaths have resulted from them.

President Obama's proposed 2014 budget calls for keeping a wide-ranging Great Lakes cleanup program near its current funding level. $300 million was requested to work on some of our lakes' biggest environmental problems, such as invasive species, contaminated hot spots, toxic algae blooms and wildlife habitat loss. Officials have awarded more than 1,500 grants under this program to university scientists, government agencies and nonprofit groups for projects in eight states.

In a breakthrough on gun legislation, two U.S. senators, a Democrat and a Republican announced yesterday they worked out a compromise on expanding background checks on buyers to include gun shows and internet sales. The deal reached sets up the likelihood of a major Senate debate on this legislations starting as soon as today.
