Sound Travels: Alverno Presents Global Union Sept. 13th & 14th

As you know by now, the time is coming for Milwaukee's premier world music festival; Alverno Presents Global Union on September 13th & 14th from noon to 7pm in Humboldt Park (3000 S Howell Ave). You may also know, I have been to each of the Global Union events, and this time will be no different. I am looking forward to being there, among the oak trees, just past the lagoon somewhere on the hill shaped green that serves as a seat for the festivities featured in the near-hidden bandshell. If you have never been to Global Union, Humboldt Park is half of the pleasure, simply perfect and nearly unknown to many, a pleasant surprise for an early fall day.

Not only is the setting perfect, but the music will be as well. Alverno does an excellent job getting a wide range of artists to field for its two-day event, gathering an ensemble of artists from all over the world for an almost otherworldly event. Melodies and rhythms that will enchant as well as pull more than a few from their comfortable spots on the green to join and enjoy the dance.

So with the event coming quickly on the calendar, I thought what better way to get the word out than to let you hear some of what's going on on the 13th & 14th, by playing some of the music from the artists that you will find there when you go. Sound Travels, and today it takes a sneek peek at the musicians performing early on the first day (Sat.) as well as those playing late the second day (Sun.), just to give you a taste.

Next week, I'll continue in the same way rounding the field with the remaining acts as we near the event itself. Also, tune in next Friday at 11-ish as I will have Alverno's Michael Harryman and David Ravel, the men who have done so much to organize this event , in the studio to talk about Global Union and Milwaukee.

And the show today? well, I have Lamajamal and Prasanna to start, with Maraca and Samba Mapanga for this edition. For details on the artists and their music check the links embedded in this schedule for the Global Union. You may notice that today's show isn't 'megamixed', which is fine by me, but really about wanting to let you really hear the songs rather than dip into the flow -- hope you enjoyed the show.
