Rhythm and Blues has always been about dreams and reality. Chero Michel has seen them both. Chero’s dreams began as a young child in Florida when her musical family gave her the inspiration to perform, and she quickly joined her lineage and took her first music lessons while spending time with her cousin’s gospel choir. It was here that her dreams would blossom into a desire to communicate through art. As a teen in Milwaukee, Chero attended a performing arts high school where she studied theater, dance, and music. She went on to continue her education at the University of Nevada at Las Vegas as a dance major. But while in school, she was encouraged by a friend to try her hand at singing. Chero would go on to finish her education in dance, but her childhood dream of singing started to grow in her heart once again. Dance would bring Chero to New York after her training at UNLV. For three more years, this young and motivated dancer would train and prepare herself for any opportunity for a break in the Big Apple. Meanwhile, in her heart, she could no longer ignore the desire in her heart to sing. So she started to nurture her talents as a singer by booking studio time on her own accord. Chero was determined to make music. She would continue to work as a dancer and choreographer, and with little knowledge of production and even less money, Chero bought a keyboard and music recording software to produce her own records. She took her new songs and, booked her own gigs, and began to perform live at small venues. Her shows generated such positive feedback that fans demanded an album from her. She continued to record and independently released her own EP. As an underground release, the album did well in the small niche that Chero created for herself. With her new success exceeding her expectations, Chero would set her goals even higher. Riding the waves of her debut, she saw an opportunity to get a fresh restart to her music career. Chero Michel set her sights on California and moved to Los Angeles. Chero brought some clothes, her dreams, and her unstoppable drive to this new and uncharted territory. With no music industry contacts, she bought a “Music Connection” magazine – a directory of music industry personnel - and looked for musicians. Amazingly, she found a contact that would refer her to producers with a repertoire of music that matched her style. She began to record and perform at live venues, and in no time, began establishing her Los Angeles fan base. Chero Michel was becoming the ultimate performer. Not only could she mesmerize you visually with the grace of a Broadway dancer, but she was driven to become a songstress. Her path looked to be clear and her future looked brighter than ever, but the reality of life would soon present a turn that would detour Chero away from her dreams of becoming an artist: back in Milwaukee, her mother was becoming gravely ill. Informed by a phone call from family members, Chero went back to Milwaukee to visit her ailing mother and her young sister. Upon arriving there, Chero did not know the graveness of her mother’s condition. Her mother even downplayed her health, encouraging Chero not to worry about her, but to focus on Chero’s career. But after a few days the seriousness of her illness would become known: she was diagnosed with throat cancer, and would never return to good health. Her mother, the woman who gave her the inspiration to pursue her dreams, would pass away just two weeks later. For a while, the music in Chero’s heart stopped. Reality had not only taken her mother but her inspiration as well. Chero would not write or perform any music for weeks. Then, one night, she had a vivid dream of her mother giving her musical advice and encouraging her to continue making music. Chero took her mother’s advice. She picked up the dream she left in LA, picked up the music she left in her heart, and began to record again. Now with her new perspective and new production, Chero is poised to share her dreams and reality with the music world. Her fresh blend of R&B, Hip-Hop, and jazz has a rare and infectious energy. Her lyrics present a bold yet familiar honesty. She will make you dance with her. She can cry with you. Chero Michel is about real life, real art, and real music.
