Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan was one of the greats. In the world of Qawwali music, there has never been a brighter star. My discovery of his music in the early 00's was a revelation only overshadowed by the news that he was a few years dead. What he left was a career spanning 40 years that introduced the world to a venerable vocal sound known as Qawwal steeped in the Sufi traditions of his native Pakistan. His tradtional songs are spellbinding, but it was his experimental work he released on David Byrne's Real World label that I played today.
