On October 17 the Greater Milwaukee Foundation hosted On the Table. The daylong event consisted of vital community conversations on how to improve our city.

Conversations were hosted all over Milwaukee, and even in neighboring counties. From schools such as Riverside University High School and Cardinal Stritch University, to the Pfister Hotel, flocks of Milwaukee residents came together during different times of the day to discuss the issues Milwaukee as a city is facing.

The goal was to spark a conversation and work with each other to come up with ideas and solutions to combat the negativity that Milwaukee is up against.

Issues presented at these discussions included housing, healthcare, education, employment opportunities for our youth and how to best utilize athletics for young students, just to name a few. On social media, #Onthetablemke showed just how important this event was to the community.

The Milwaukee Bucks and America Scores worked together to discuss how sports can positively and negatively influence the lives of student-athletes in Milwaukee.

Many coaches and former athletes with different backgrounds showed up to discuss some of the educational needs that can make sports more constructive for young athletes.

A lesson as simple as teaching athletes to lose graciously in a society that often praises winners was a concern for coaches. Participants also wanted to learn more about coaching athletes who experience trauma at different levels.

One of the coaches present was LaNelle Ramey. After 20 plus years of coaching and working with students, he still advocates for sports as a means to teach character and prepare young athletes for the future beyond athletics.

“The true essence of sports is to teach highs and lows, but what happens is that society looks at the winners…We all win but not everyone can, so there has to be a balance in teaching,” said Ramey. “That’s how you build resiliency, that’s how you build courage, that’s how you build hard work and dedication.”
