Each Friday at 8am on 88Nine, Milwaukee Magazine’s dining critic, Ann Christenson, and 88Nine foodie Tarik Moody discuss Milwaukee’s culinary and restaurant culture. In case you miss their segments on the air, here they are.

This week on This Bites, we talked about the inaugural Milwaukee Black Restaurant Week; a dinner to benefit homeless vets, where local chefs reimagine Waffle House dishes; a historic Lindsay Heights Tavern that is getting a second life; Pastiche’s future home; and tasty cookies.

MKE Black-Owned Restaurant Week is an opportunity for Black-Owned restaurants to bring in new customers and raise awareness. It allows Milwaukee to support minority-owned eateries. Here are the remaining events:

Friday, April 22: Lunch at R-Life Cafe | Dinner at City Net Jazz Cafe (in partnership with Recycle the Black Dollar), 6 p.m.

Saturday, April 23: Lunch at Daddy’s Cafe & Grille, 12 p.m. | Dinner at Terri Lynn’s Express

On May 23, the Milwaukee Homeless Veterans Initiative will host Milwaukee Chefs for Homeless Vets: Waffle House Re-Imagined. From the press release:

Eleven top Milwaukee chefs will host a benefit dinner Monday May 23 with original gourmet dishes inspired by the popular Waffle House’s menu to raise funds for the Milwaukee Homeless Veterans Initiative.

Two of the event’s chefs are vets, some of the kitchen staff are recent vets and other chefs are in military families. The chefs and staff want to raise money for homeless vets, inspire recent vets to get back on their feet and make more people aware of the Milwaukee Homeless Veterans Initiative (MHVI) and encourage greater community involvement.

“Milwaukee Chefs for Homeless Vets: Waffle House Re-Imagined” takes place from 6:30 p.m. – 10 p.m. at Merriment Social, 240 E Pittsburgh Ave., Milwaukee.

The evening will feature the chefs at stations serving their unique Waffle House-inspired creations. Another station will serve Waffle House-inspired adult beverages. Tickets are $150 and include food and drinks (wine, beer and cocktail options). Seating is limited.
