"Meet The Need": Day 23 | NAMI, Brenda Wesley

Listen: For Day 23 of 50 in our Meet The Need campaign, we hear from the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), a group using education and advocacy to improve the lives of those with mental illness, their families, and those touched by mental illness. Oftentimes, when an individual is diagnosed with mental illness, they aren't pointed to the resources they need to help them meet the new set of challenges they're facing. And while their family may want to provide support, they may find themselves equally in the dark. This is where NAMI fits into the picture, both educating those directed effected by mental illness, but also working to raise awareness in the public. In these pieces, Education and Outreach Coordinator Brenda Wesley shares the work they do at NAMI. While you listen, think about where understanding and awareness fit into the basic need picture: -How NAMI educates folks diagnosed with mental illness and their families: -Why Brenda works for NAMI, and how mental illness has effected her life: -The categories of mental illness and what we need to do to attack those problems: For more information on NAMI visit their website , and if you'd like to help NAMI meet their needs this holiday season, learn how you can help here .
