"The Neighborhood Project": Lindsay Heights | Handsome Barbers

Listen: The neighborhood around Center Street and Teutonia Avenue has seen some major changes in the last 46 years. As work left the neighborhood, so did much of the community that was built around those family-supporting jobs. In its place, crime and poverty found a foothold, but in recent years, the area has tapped into new sources of energy, reclaiming the neighborhood and rebuilding the community. Through it all, Handsome Barbers has been a stronghold for neighbors seeking conversation, information, and a really good cut.

During  my interview with developer Melissa Goins about Teutonia Garden, the new home of Handsome Barbers, she was giving me a little history about the business. While she was able to fill me in on quite a few details, she said at one point, "You'd really have to ask Harrison (co-owner of Handsome Barbers) about that..." A few phone calls later, a time was set for the interview:

While I was at Handsome Barber Shop, I figured I'd chat with a few customers and barbers, and boy was it a lot of fun. I ended up with my first straight razor shave, a lot of good conversation, and a big smile on my face: I had so much fun! If you've never been to Handsome, it's totally worth stopping by for some top notch spiffing. Next time I'm up for a night out on the town, I'll be sure to hit up Barber Dave a.k.a. Sharper Image to make me look crispy, but not burnt.
