"Safe Streets, Healthy Kids": Artists Working in Education and Monkey Boy

Listen: As we saw and heard earlier this week, Artists Working in Education spends the summer bringing art to neighborhoods where kids might be looking for something to do. It’s a simple and awesome program — load a truck with art supplies, drive it to a park, and let art teachers teach kids. They’ll be buzzing around Milwaukee for the rest of the summer, leaving a trail of art and happy kids wherever they go, so catch them while you can ( their summer schedule can be found here).

While I was checking out the action at Modrzejewski Park along the KK River Parkway, I had a chance to speak with AWE intern Jeanette Arellano. I asked if there was a particular kid that stood out in her time working with AWE. A smile immediately spread across her face — she knew exactly what I was wanted. Monkey Boy: see podcast below.

To learn more about Artists Working in Education, head over to their website . Again, if you’d like to check them out in person, and I have to say it’s totally worth it, check out their summer schedule here . Finally, learn more about Robert J. Modrzejewski Park’s namesake here .
