Tarik aka The Architect's Documentary Film Picks for the Milwaukee Film Festival

Today is the kick-off of the Milwaukee Film Festival.  I have been looking forward to this for some time now.  I missed last year's festival due to military obligations.  There are so many great films this year so I decided to share with you some of my picks, which are mostly documentaries.

1. Waiting For Superman:  This documentary about the state of education in this country was directed by the Davis Guggenheim who directed "An Inconvenient Truth".
Sunday, Sept 26th, 2:00pm, Oriental Theatre

Cooking History: A film about food and war.  This foreign film tells about war and the numerous military chefs who prepare the food.
Tuesday, Sept 28th, 3:15pm, Oriental Theatre
Wednesday, Sept 29th, 9:30pm North Shore Cinema

Garbo: The Spy: There is nothing like a good spy movie, especially when is about a real-life spy. The documentary is about the real-life spu Juan Pujol. He helped the Allies to defeat the Nazi's during WWII.

Gerrymandering: With the mid-term elections coming in November, this is a perfect time for a documentary like Gerrymandering.  The film is about the real politics of elections and the process of redrawing electoral districts.  If you vote, you need to see this film.
Sunday, Sept. 26th, 6:45pm, Oriental Theatre
Tuesday, Sept. 28th, 3:15pm, North Shore Cinema

Freedom Riders:  A very powerful film about eight months in 1961 that changed America forever.  The film examines the people who were involved in bringing equality to all through interviews with the riders, witnesses and government officials.

Friday, Sept. 24, 7:15pm, North Shore Cinema
Wednesay, Sept. 29th, 1:30pm Oriental Theatre

Soundtrack for a Revolution:  I was actually trying to do a screening of this film earlier this year, but it didn't work out.  However, I'm very glad that it is being screened during the Milwaukee Film Festival.  It is a film about the civil right movement but with a focus on the music. The film features renditions of of civil rights anthems by current artists such as The Blind Boys of Alabama, TV On The Radio, The Roots and more.
