This Friday, October 15 at Stonefly in Riverwest. Milwaukee will a get a show like no other they will see in 2010 or for that matter 2009, 2008, etc. A little huge taste of New Orleans will invade Milwaukee. I'm not talking about food, but New Orleans Bounce. Her name is Big Freedia (pronounced Free-Da) - The Queen Diva of Bounce. Before I go on, what is bounce music?
Bounce Music is a sub genre of hip hop music that originated in New Orleans over 20 years ago. Bounce Music is basically party music which uses a style refer to as "Call and Response." A basic bounce track consists of a two basic elements. They are "Triggerman" beat, which was sampled from the song "Drag Rap" by the Showboys and the "Brown Beat" by Bay Area legend Cameron Paul who used to make beats not with a sampler but with tape and razor blades (here is a clip of Cameron Paul demonstrating mixing techniques). Then the final ingredient is the dancing, which involves the derriere or to most the "booty". That's the basic elements of bounce.
Within the last few years, New Orleans Bounce has gain national attention due in part to hurricane Katrina. Katrina displace a lot of people from New Orleans to all over the country and with them included New Orleans Bounce artists such as Big Freedia. These artists brought their music with them to the cities like Houston, and Atlanta and it spread like wildfire. Big Freedia became one of the Bounce artists to garner widespread attention. She is a transgender, gay rapper that has become part a subset of bounce some have called "Sissy Bounce" Sissy is a term used in New Orleans for biological men with varied and ambiguous sexual identities.
"Azz Everwhere" and "Gin in My System" from her albums "An Ha, Oh Yeah" and "Queen Diva" were the tracks that brought Big Freedia some mainstream success. She has even appeared on New Orleans band Galactic's latest album "Ya-Ka-May" and went on tour with them. She also has performed with artists such as Spank Rock, Ninjasonik, Japanther.
Big Freedia has even been covered by some of the country's biggest publications including The New York Times(several times), LA Times, Village Voice, XLR8R, Good Magazine, Stereogum, and The Fader. Most recently, Carson Daly did an expose on her on his show Last Call with Carson Daly.
So Milwaukee get ready for a one of kind show this Friday night at Stonefly in Riverwest. Not only Big Freedia will be there but her dancers known as 'The Divas' and her DJ Rusty Lazer will be part of the show. Plus special guest Milwaukee's own Juiceboxxx and DJ Tarik of 88Nine RadioMilwaukee. So Milwaukee are you ready to shake your booty?
