Today on Seven o'Clock sample, we explore a UK, Milwaukee connection.
In 1989, London based dance group Soul II Soul released their debut album CLUB CLASSICS: VOL. 1. This album created a huge buzz here in the states with the chart topping dance hit "Back To Life"
This was a break out smash for Soul II Soul and reached all the way to #5 on the US charts. This song's success has a direct connection to Milwaukee.
The drum sample comes from a Milwaukee based R&B producer, who is no stranger to the top 20 charts.
Harvey Scales, Milwaukee's "Godfather of Soul" is best known for his production of the disco hit "Disco Lady". Scales received national recognition for co-writing Billboard Hot 100 chart-topping single for Johnnie Taylor. "Disco Lady" was the very first platinum single in the history of the Recording Industry Association of America, selling over two million copies.
Scales had plenty of success as a solo artist as well. In 1979, he released Hot Foot (A Funque Dizco Opera) on Casablanca Records. It had some great jams, including this funk classic, "Dancing Room Only" ( check out that funky drum break )
Harvey still has deep roots here in Milwaukee, and even plays from time to time. Be sure to pick up this record if you find it at your favorite shop.
