Reggae An 'Ting... Sound Travels

Another round of classic reggae cuts for you on Sound Travels today. I figured I had to do it as we head into the tail end of summer. Everyone needs an island vacation right? That's what I think and when I posed the question on our facebook page, got a ton of responses.

Junior Murvin's "Police & Thieves" got the set going. This version pre-dates The Clash's version and Murvin's sweet vocal is definitive in my mind. Dennis Brown, one of the best reggae singers of all time and a big influence on Bob Marley's work as a contemporary if his, never seems to get the cred he deserves. His discography is super long and super fresh. The Abyssinians' "Satta Massagana" is a Rasta anthem and for a long time seemed like it popped up in everyone's reggae mixes.

Sister Nancy, perhaps the first female emcee makes the cut today for her solid classic "Bam Bam;" and ther perhaps may beno song I have played more as a DJ-- love it! I wasn't familiar with Phyllis Dillon's "Perfidia" until facebook friend Kris Cohen suggested it...now, I'll never forget it. Another FB friend, Harmony G., suggested yesterday some Barringtion Levy. This is one of my favorite reggae songs of all time and a window into the sounds we'll get into tomorrow. So if you liked the set and want to get involved tomorrow, stay tuned for the FB post inviting you to participate! If you missed the play, check these tunes out...
