Eat Local, Milwaukee/Make a Difference Week 1

In Milwaukee, there's a variety of opportunities to learn how to shop and eat locally. I recently went to the Eat Local Resource Fair at the Urban Ecology Center to get information, tips, ideas, and tools on our city's local food scene.

"Eat Local Challenge" is from September 1st through the 14th, and it's where community residents, local foodies and restaurants are involved in strengthening the local economy and trying local ingredients. The great part about the challenge is that you make your own rules. You know what you're eating and where you're food comes from, all while reducing your carbon footprint.

So what steps can you take in getting know our local food region better? There's Community Supported Agriculture, which allows members to receive weekly deliveries of fresh local produce throughout the growing season. Let's not forgot about our local Farmer's Market's. That's where you get the chance to know your farmers. You can ask them about products and try something you've never had before. Or next time you go to the grocery store, keep an eye peeled for locally produced products. This could range from organic beans, beer, tofu, cheese, meat, milk, sprouts or dried fruit...the list really goes on.
