Milwaukee Habitat for Humanity relies on volunteers, on students, and on the community to design and build affordable homes for Milwaukee residents. I walked down to their HQ and talked with Adam Helt-Baldwin, Construction Manager, who also provided me a tour of their facilities AND demonstrated the use of some really cool powertools. Milwaukee Habitat works with various educational institutions including (but certainly not limited to) MIAD, UWM, and MATC, so, besides the construction component, Habitat provides educational experience to students at these participating schools.
I also spoke with various staff and volunteers of Habitat, including John Cunningham (Construction Supervisor), Chris Garrison (ANOTHER Construction Supervisor: do they supervise each other?) and Paul Smith ( A Brush with Kindness Project Manager).
Additionally, Americorps student volunteers were present to talk about their work with Habitat. These folks know how to wield a hammer, an Exacto, and a tape measure. Look out!
