This Sunday's Sound Travels mixtape was exactly what it never is, a guest mix. Rarely, do I have others in for the mixtape because I have a ton of fun putting them together myself. This was Super Bowl Sunday however and I thought I'd share a mix from a fave of mine, DJ Zhao of Ngoma Sound System. Zhao, a Berlin-based DJ like world music like I do and carefully crafts set that not only sound good, but connect the music to its context.
Radio Ngoma Transatlantic Passage is just one of many mixes available for download on DJ Zhao's Soundcloud page and is all about rhumba. In his own words:
"follows the musical diaspora from Africa to the Caribbean and back again, the story of Rumba is one of the central narratives of modern music. This edition of Radio Ngoma explores amazing dance music from places like the Congo and Nigeria to Haiti, Guadalupe, Colombia -- timeless music to warm the heart and move the feet."
