2 o'clock Break : The Quincy Jones Edition

All this week on 2' O'clock Break we looked back at the music of Quincy Jones.  Wednesday was Quincy's 79th birthday.  For well over 60 of those 79 years, he has been writing, directing, and performing amazing music.

This week we looked at a large list of Quincy's songs, and how they've been sampled.

On Monday, we listened to "Summer In The City"

This tracks has been sampled many times, but most popular by far, is The Pharcyde's "Passin' Me By"

On Tuesday, we heard a jazz standard, performed only as Quincy could, "The Midnight Sun Will Never Set". (Check out this cool old footage of Quincy conducting)

This song was sampled by Guru on the Jazzmatazz Vol. 2 album.  ( I Love This VIDEO! )

Wednesday was Quincy's birthday, so I selected my favorite track to honor him on his birthday.  On the album Smackwater Jack, Bill Cosby joined Quincy in studio for the song "Hikky Burr".  (This became the theme song for the Cosby Show)

This track was sampled in 2010, by PRETTY LIGHTS for the song  "Gold Coast Hustle"

Thursday, we explored one of my favorite Quincy Jones albums.  In 1974 Quincy teamed up with Herbie Hancock, Bob James, Billy Preston, Dennis Coffey, Eric Gale, and a long list of other jazz greats, to create the album BODY HEAT.

The track "Along Came Betty" was sampled by Detroit producer Andres on the track "Step To The Side"

We wrapped up the week, with one of Quincy's most infamous songs.  The unmistakable scream of "Ironside"

This song was most famously used in the movie KILL BILL. This sound has been sampled by several acts through out the years, but my personal favorite; Positive K's "Step Up Front"
