Tarik's Picks For The Top 5 Summerfest Bands That You May Not Have Heard Of Before

The Big Gig is now upon us, and everyone is going to check out their favorite bands, but what about the bands that you may not have heard of before.  The best thing about music festivals is the chance to discover something new.  So I went through the schedule and picked out several artists and bands that are definitely worth checking out.  Even I haven't seen them perform live.

K.Flay - July 4, 6:00pm Harley Davidson Roadhouse

I have been a huge of K.Flay for awhile now.  I first heard her on a track from Zion I.  This Stanford graduate, who is originally from the Chicago area, is a producer, singer, and rapper.  Carson Daly has even featured her on his late night show.  I missed an opportunity to see her at this year's SXSW.  Check out her covering The Zombies' classic "Time of the Season" for Billboard magazine

Gold Fields - July 3, US Celluar Connection Stage at 3pm

I don't know much about Gold Fields other than they are from the land of Gotye aka  Australia.  They have supported the band Naked and Famous in the UK. They even supported Rhythm Lab Radio 2011 Artist of The Year SBTRKT. They are currently signed to the label Astralwerks and recently released their self-tiltled EP via Bandcamp.  I definitely see big things from this band.  You should catch them now at Summerfest before you will be paying big bucks to see them in the future.

I Blame Coco, July 1 - Miller Lite Oasis at 8:00pm

I have written about I Blame Coco in the pastI Blame Coco is fronted by the daughter of Sting, and she eerily does sound little bit like her father.  I Blame Coco is just some solid indie pop.  She has collaborated with that night's headliner on the same stage Robyn.

Gold Motel, July 1 - U.S. Cellular Connection Stage @ 5:30pm

Gold Motel actually played in Milwaukee a few weeks back for the Common Pitch After Party at Turner Hall.  88Nine also featured this band out of Chicago on today's New Music Wednesday. Gold Motel is the Chicago-based solo project of singer-songwriter Greta Morgan, formerly of The Hush Sound.  Their music is perfect for the warm weather.  Recommend that you play their music at your next pool party.

Big Black Delta, July 4 - U.S. Cellular Connection Stage at 8:00pm

This is a very interesting project from Jonathan Bates, originaly from the L.A. based band Mellowdrone.  Big Black Delta has a dark electronic vibe, which I love.  Big Black Delta started as a bedroom project with a laptop, which came from the keyboardist of Nine Inch Nails.  Bates even teamed up with M83 to remix a Daft Punk song from the Tron soundtrack.  I'm really excited about this project.

Check out their remix of M83's "Midnight City"
