Don't Sleep On | Matthew E. White

On Monday's 'Are You Feeling This,'I featured a new artist out of Richmond, Va by the name of Matthew E. White.  We featured the song "Big Love," which I can say is probably one of the most unique songs I have heard all year.  Drawing inspirations from Dr. John to Allen Toussaint to Leonard Cohen with tinges of Gospel music and Blues.  His music even draws from his avant-garde jazz band Fight The Big Bull

"The world of Matthew E. White unfolded out of the mingled sands of Virginia Beach and Manila, the youngest son in a family that raised him barefoot between the blurred racket of that far eastern jungle city and the backyard lightning-bug-hum of a trimmed southern lawn. When the earth shifted into his shape, there was already a deep sonic archaeology. The dusts of the Delta had swirled into Rock and Roll. King Tubby was dubbing. Terry Riley was overdubbing. Caetano Veloso had just turned 40. Muddy Waters was just about gone. Jimmy Cliff had had sung "Many Rivers to Cross." So had Harry Nilsson. White shared this common inheritance. He stitched his own flag out of it."

An interesting little fact is that Reggie Pace, who is in White's Fight The Big Bull also plays in Bon Iver's band. Check out his video for the song "Epitaph On The World" from Fight The Big Bull and David Kartsen.

White has even collaborated with artists like Justin Vernon, Sharon Van Etten, and Megafaun.  So far White as leaked two songs from his forthcoming album Big Inner, which will be released on the label Hometapes (Collection of Colonies of Bees, Megafaun, All Tiny Creatures) in August.  Just check out the songs "Big Love" and "One Of These Days."

I definitely see big things from White and his forthcoming album, and that is why you shouldn't sleep on him and his music. Get to know him now!
