If you drove near Southridge Mall last week, you couldn't miss them. Dozens of Greenfield firefighters took to the streets near 76th Street and Layton Avenue, chanting "fill the boot, fill the boot."
It's an effort to raise more than $40,000 for the Wisconsin Muscular Dystrophy Association.
At every red light -- for three days straight -- firefighters weaved in and out of stopped cars, asking drivers for donations. Dollar by dollar, hour by hour, they're hoping to exceed last years total.
"All that money will stay locally to help families in Southeastern Wisconsin," said Elizabeth Wagler, Executive Director at the Wisconsin Muscular Dystrophy Association.
Donations benefit the MDA, a national organization helping children and adults suffering from muscular dystrophy. Along with trying to find a cure, the MDA sponsors Camp Wonderland, a no-cost summer camp for children afflicted by the disease. In addition, the money helps families pay for treatment and prevention of disease-related complications.
At last check, the Greenfield Fire Department was close to its $40,000 goal, but it is still tallying the donations. Check back for more totals as they come in.
