A mansion morphed into an elementary school. Several historic homes are now cozy bed and breakfasts. Stables have become more like cubicles. The historic properties of Concordia Neighborhood have gone through a lot of changes over the years. Annemarie Sawkins says that’s normal - neighborhoods are constantly in transition.
Annemarie is an architectural advisor for Historic Milwaukee Inc, a local preservation group. They run a variety of tours around the city, helping people understand and appreciate the history of their surroundings.
They recently featured Historic Concordia Neighborhood for their Spaces and Traces tour. Concordia is just west of Marquette University between Highland Blvd. and Wisconsin Avenue and 27th and 35th streets.
We retraced the Concordia tour and Annemarie described how Concordia was once a countryside suburb for Milwaukee's early wealthy class. Concordia has gone through many changes since its development in the 1850’s and it’s continuing to evolve with recent investment from the Forest County Potawatomi.
