Acid... Jazz

Sound Travels this week to noplace in particular. This week we'll be getting into some jazz, funk, soul, bossa and beats that when swung with groove as your sensibility, become a sound called acid jazz. I remember when acid jazz was a hot item, a theoretical 'next big thing' that never truly materialized. The scene had a heyday in the 80's and 90's, and that scene was more London melting-pot than a proper scene and its practitioners were a motley collection of cats that were known for dabbling in a broad, jazz-related pallette with plenty of flair from jazz scenes around the world.

You can hear it in the sound. Jazz might be the first thing that comes to mind when listening to this music, but you'd have to be deaf not to notice the latin beat or bossa nova vibes, perhaps its the syncopated rhythm section or the odd instrumentation; and not conclude that this is also world music, or jazz with a global flair.

You may already know all this stuff, but if you thought that acid jazz died in the 90's, you're mistaken. Plenty of new artists are making music just like this, artists like the ones I pplayed today...
