Seven O Clock Sample Salute to Marva Whitney

In the final week of 2012, we lost an unsung hero of soul music. Whitney was considered by many funk enthusiasts to be one of the "rawest" and "brassiest" music divas.

She joined forces with the godfather of soul, James Brown in the late 1960s.  JB produced several hits for Marva, including her first chart hit "It's My Thing (You Can't Tell Me Who to Sock It To)," a response to The Isley Brothers' hit "It's Your Thing"; her record reached #19 on the Billboard R&B chart and #82 on the Hot 100 in 1969.

Many acts have sampled this song, including EPMD, NWA, Big Daddy Kane and Fatboy Slim.  My personal favorite use of this sample, has got to be Public Enemy's "Bring The Noise"
