Hilton Garden Inn Restores Historic Downtown Building

Hilton Garden Inn General Manager Lisa Farrell explains the restoration of one of Milwaukee's historic buildings.

It has been almost a month since the Hilton Garden Inn officially opened its doors in downtown Milwaukee.

Months of intensive restoration led to the opening, from chemically cleaning the original leaded glass to painstakingly repairing the terra cotta floors, and General Manager Lisa Farrell says the boutique hotel is ready to welcome guests to downtown.

"Things are coming to life, which is wonderful.  This street has been, for lack of a better word, dead," Farrell said. "Eventually, I hope to see this area flourishing, and there's no reason it shouldn't be."

Located near Broadway and Michigan streets, the registered historic building was once home to Northwestern Mutual Life's Milwaukee headquarters in the late 1800s.  Lots has changed in Milwaukee's downtown landscape since then, but much of this building's historic charm remains untouched.

"There's a lot to admire in the building. Everything is so ornate," Farrell said.

Of course, the building is something you have to see to appreciate.
