Funkadelic's Knee Deep In Samples

This week on the Seven O'Clock Sample, we are exploring the music of P-Funk.  Parliament and Funkadelic are responsible for some of the greatest funk music ever recorded.  But what's the deal with the two seperate names?

George Clinton began the doo-wop group The Parliaments in the late 1950s in Plainfield, New Jersey. The group slowly changed over time and by the early 1970s the groups Parliament and Funkadelic formed and were operating concurrently and consisted of the same stable of musicians playing different types of funk music for two different labels.  Yes, he was on two labels at the same time!

In 1979, Funkadelic released UNCLE JAM WANTS YOU on Warner Bros.  This album if full of "jams", but few are as funky as this one...

In 2008, I had the pleasure of DJing with Maseo of De La Soul.  He told me the story of the first time he hear DJ Red Alert playing this song.  He and the boys went back to Prince Paul, and said, we should make a song out of this Funkadelic track.  That song, became their biggest hit; "Me Myself and I".
