Oy!

Moving from the morning to the afternoon on Sound Travels this Wednesday with some new music from Ghanaian/Swiss singer  Oy(aka Joy Frimpong), right after New Music Wednesday. If you weren't listening closely, you might have missed the story.

Oy's new album Kokokyinaka is all over the place in a good way, much like the journey that brought this thing to be. The release is a reflection of its creation and her journey through Mali, Ghana, Burkina Faso and South Africa, picking up "found" sounds recorded as she travelled, and with lyrics inspired either by traditional African stories or proverbs or by simple conversations.

What it is, is a very Pan-African album, an album that has no particular genre, rather melding many into one tasty curry. Cut after cut, a melange of musics from those travels. Some songs work, others...meh, but the ones that do are superb enough that I can live with the misses.
