This week on the Seven O'Clock Sample, we have been breaking down the source material for Massive Attack's debut album BLUE LINES. This 1991 masterpiece was pivotal in the global sub-genre phenomenon known as trip-hop. The sounds laid down in Bristol in the late 80s and early 90s was a perfect mix of electronica, reggae, hip hop and jazz. So it's no surprise that most of the sample sources for this album fit into one of the aforementioned categories.
Enter Tom Scott and The LA Express. Tom Scott's best-known works are the theme songs for TV series from the 1970s and 1980s — Starsky and Hutch (a track entitled "Gotcha!") and The Streets of San Francisco, and his soprano sax solo and fills on the 1975 No. 1 hit single "Listen to What the Man Said" for Wings. We have featured hisversion of "Today" on the website, which was sampled in the Pete Rock & CL Smooth 1992 hit "They Reminisce Over You (T.R.O.Y.)".
The drums and keys at the begining of this track, were used by Massive Attack on the title track "Blue Lines".
