When Fela! The Musical completed it's magical Broadway run a few years back, I sorta sropped thinking about it. Till today when I learned that the house band that had been charged the enormous task of keeping Fela's music real for the production of said musical had decided they were going to be a real band. Realizing they had something special, that band ultimately became The Fontanelles and found their way on to our airwaves at 11am today right after New Music Wednesday.
Straight ahead and all the way afrobeat, their music continues to honor the late, great Fela Kuti by playing original, raw and funky beats that stay true to the sound, and that's a good thing...
