MPS adds community service to cirriculum

Milwaukee Public Schools have added new graduation requirements affecting the class of 2015 and beyond.

High School students must now complete 20 hours of community service, take a course with a service learning experience, or take an online course.

It's part of a larger effort to prepare students for college.

"As colleges recruit, they want those kinds of kids in their programs,   who come to school excited to be at school because they have a purpose," said Community Service Coordinator Kathleen End.

Students who choose the community service option must get approval from an academic advisor.  They must also complete a written essay about their experience.

Find out more about the new requirements at the official MPS website.
