Every Monday at 88Nine we have a music meeting. Lots of fantastic songs end up on the cutting room floor for some reason or another. Here are some great ones that didn't get selected, but are still amazing songs. These are the deep cuts, the obscure, and the weird. The orphans, the castaways and cut outs. Take them into your breast, nurse them on your own. Make them yours.
This is my article, so I am going to start with my pick. Labeled by Jordan Lee as being, "too cool for school" this song by artist Son Lux comes from my most anticipated album of the the remaining year, Lanterns, that comes out on Oct. 29th. Baritone sax, rising chorus, crashing drums, beautiful arrangements, this song is truly ahead of its time.
This one comes courtsey of Mr.Gold Pipes himself, Marcus Doucette. The song is by Hawk in Paris and the song is Freaks. It's pulsing drive had us all simultaneously bopping our heads to the rhythm. Dig this ditty.
Kallo brought in British trip-hop group Morcheeba. The group broke out with 1998's The Sea, then broke up in the mid 2000's and are now back. The new album is just as smooth and polished as anything they have produced. If you loved the Janelle Monae album, you will love this track.
Sometimes someone will bring in someting that we have all been listening to for a while, but seemed to slip through the cracks. This week AMKE co-host and story producer Dori Zori brought in a track by Sylvan Esso that many of us, myself included, have had in heavy rotation on our own speakers. Play it Right brings in beautiful synthesizer work from electronic musician Nick Sanborn and matches it with delicate vocals from Amelia Meath.
In the other chair of AMKE, Jordan Lee was on point this week. Jordan brought the new single from 80's synth pop revival group Cut Copy. Their 2012 album Zonoscope was released to huge critical acclaim and we are sure that their upcoming release Free Your Mind will as well. This is the first single from the album, it's called We are Explorers.
Jordan also brought in new music from King Khan and the Shrines. I gave it a 10. Bollywood with a horn section, violins, and understated guitar solos. Hail to the King baby.
There is someting about a song with a clap break that just grabs you. Dangerous by Big Data was Kat's pick of the week. Listen to this one as you walk down the street and feel like you are the main character in a movie.
