This weekend Milwaukee plays host to Dublin native, James Vincent McMorrow. The accomplished Irish singer-song writer will be performing at the Turner Hall Ballroom on Friday, March 28th in what is sure to be a moving and emotion-churning set. The doors open at 7:00pm with Canadian folk rock artist, Aidan Knight opening.
James Vincent McMorrow comes to Milwaukee fresh off his newest album, Post Tropical, released back in January. Post Tropical is the artist’s first full album release since 2010 and represents a turning point in his style. McMorrow, previously renowned for his acoustic folk roots, has now ventured into a more soulful and experimental genre. The new album incorporates elements of electronic instruments and a small dose of hip hop to create a more complex music style that has been praised by fans and critics alike.
It is hard not to casually compare McMorrow to Wisconsin’s own Bon Iver. While this is a fair pairing, a deeper listen to McMorrow’s body of work shows the artist’s distinct style. After hearing the first song off the new album, “Cavalier”, it would seem a more telling comparison would be to hip-hop soul singer Frank Ocean. With his angelic voice, McMorrow gently lulls you in to a peaceful stupor. Listening to James is like entering a dream world. His peaceful lyrics seem to place the listener in a dazed trance that stays with you until the final note is played. With this in mind, come to Turner Hall at around 7:00pm for a truly heartfelt performance that should not be missed.
