A local initiative is working one-on-one with struggling soon-to-be third graders, helping them learn to read.
" Milwaukee Succeeds is a broad-based, communitywide collaboration that aims to improve educational outcomes for every child in Milwaukee, in every school, cradle to career," according to its website. "Milwaukee Succeeds will begin to move the needle on what works for kids, and better position our children and our community for a successful future."
In one of its programs, the initiative aims to tackle Milwaukee's city-wide defficiency among third grade readers.
Right now, only about 15 percent of third graders are proficient for their grade level, but Milwaukee Succeeds hopes to get that number over 30 percent by the year 2020.
