Herman, the singing corn man

As a kid of the 70's, Sesame Street was a staple in my house. As soon as Bob started singing "Who are the people in your neighborhood..." I was in heaven. That's probably where my passion for meeting and learning about new people started. Luckily, I live in a city filled with interesting characters.

88nine's Development Director Francesca Kempfer introduced me to one of those folks last week. We visited the West Allis Green Market to meet 91 year-old Herman, The Singing Corn Man. "My mother used to sing and her and I would sing together,"  says Herman as he remembers fondly. "Every time I went someplace, people would ask me to sing." For the last 26 years, Herman has worked the West Allis Green Market, selling corn and singing. He's become a bit of a celebrity at the market, making many friends along the way. He even does something special for the kids when they stop by his booth. Listen to the story above to find out!
