Express Yourself Milwaukee (EYM) is run by a passionate group of artists with one mission: introducing young people to the world of music, dance, theater and visual art. EYM's programs are designed to reach at-risk youth, teaching them to express themselves through the arts in a healthy, creative way.
I recently visited an EYM class in session at Neeskara Elementary School in Washington Heights. "A lot of young people feel they don't have a support system in their life that is consistent," says Holly Haebig, Therapeutic Services Coordinator at EYM. "We try to be that every week." All the kids are really enjoying their weekly music class today. Between the hypnotic drumming and call and response, this music class seems like a much needed break from their regular routine. Holly says, the classes actually help kids that tend to get distracted during regular classes stay focused.
