The annual celebration of independent record stores, Record Store Day, is April 18, 2015. If you have never participated in Record Store Day, you might think, “Oh cool, there will probably be a bunch of sales, and I can get some cheap records to start up a record collection.”
In fact, it’s the opposite. Everything is more expensive, BUT, for good reason. Record Store Day is an all-out-nerd-fest for record heads. Limited qualities of exclusive vinyl albums are pressed and released. If that last sentence made your heart skip a beat, Record Store Day is for you.
This year’s releases were just announced. There are already items that we are freaking out about (or maybe it’s just me, I don’t know).
See the whole list HERE.
Here is my must have in each category so far: 7”, 10”, and 12”
Must have 7”
Father John Misty’s previously unreleased B-Side, “Never Been A Woman” ON RED HEART SHAPED VINYL. Seriously, I will rip this out of an old lady's hands if I have to. (Just kidding, I would never do that. But seriously, I want this thing so badly.)
Must have 10”
Rocky Horror Picture Show – Time Warp. How fun will it be to play this at a party and everybody simultaneously breaks into dance?
Must have 12”
?This was, by far, the toughest one. But I have to go with The Hold Steady’s Boys and Girls in America. It was previously released on vinyl in a very small batch and originals are nearly impossible to get. I discovered John Berryman by listening to this album. This album deserves my pick.
(Honorable mentions: Sun Ra – Calling Planet Earth, Otis Redding – Otis Blue: Otis Redding Sings Soul, Run The Jewels Record Store Day Release (no idea what this is, but I want it), The White Stripes – Get Behind Me Satan, Wu-Tang Clan – Protect Ya Neck, Various Artists – When I Reach That Heavenly Shore: Unearthly Black Gospel, 1926-1936)
Oh yeah, there is also the elusive Elvis release from Third Man Records that hasn’t officially been announced yet…
Stores open at 7AM. If you want the good stuff, get in line no later than 5AM.
