10,000+ items housed in historic costume collection

If you saw a group of Sisters in full habits, alongside a runway during Fashion Week, you would probably take their photo, right? That's exactly what happened 50+ years ago in New York City. The publishing of that photo sparked a relationship with world-renowned fashion designers and a college right here in Milwaukee.

Sister Aloyse Hessburg from Mount Mary College started building relationships with fashion designers after her trip to NYC, and for the last 5 decades, has helped build the Historic Costume Collection at Mount Mary College. With over 10,000 garments, accessories and fashion periodicals, the collection houses items ranging from the 18th century to the present. Not only has the collection become a tool for students at the college, it serves as a historical resource for the community.
