Documentary film explores Milwaukee homelessness

Throughout the Milwaukee Film Festival, we're talking with Milwaukee based filmmakers screening their work in the Cream City Cinema Series.

Former U.S. Federal Agent-turned-film director Faith Kohler joined me in studio to talk about her documentary  30 Seconds Away: Breaking the Cycle.

The film puts human faces to a community often painted in broad strokes -- the chronically homeless.  In her feature film debut, Kohler mixes in interviews from law enforcement and the legal communities, along with personal stories from homeless men she encountered.

From the film's description:

Milwaukee's homelessness problem is examined by no less an authority than former federal agent and Marquette graduate Faith Kohler in 30 SECONDS AWAY, a vital documentary examination of this issue from all sides of the argument. Spending time with those struggling to survive on the streets as well as with the justice system and Milwaukee police stuck between trying to enforce the law and caring for these forgotten members of society (through means such as our local Homeless Outreach Team), Kohler paints a powerful and empathetic portrait of an ever-growing problem with no easy solutions.

Show times:

  • Tuesday, Sept. 29, 6:30 p.m. at the Oriental Theatre
  • Friday, Oct. 2, 3:30 p.m. at the Times Cinema
