The New York Dolls split up on this day in 1974

While never a household name, The New York Dolls were a tremendous influence on the rock world of the 70's, 80's and beyond. In a very short run they put out just two records and promptly broke up on this day in 1974. Lead singer David Johansen would later emerge in the 80's in his Buster Poindexter persona, including a cameo in the Bill Murray film 'Scrooged'. Here's the original "Trash" from the Dolls.

While many bands and artists were influenced by the Dolls, they had arguably their greatest fan in a young Stephen Morrissey, who not only chartered the New Yorks Dolls first fan club in the U.K. but also authord a book on the band in 1981, right before joining The Smiths, so it's fitting we get our Dolls cover from the Mozzer himself.
