Jurassic and Ike

It’s been over a week since I last posted a 7 o Clock sample blog. With the fund drive last week, I wanted to go over some of the best sample examples we’ve seen over the past season, so I opted not to re-post those.

But it’s a new week, and time for some new samples.

In 1998, I got my first DJ mixer, and one of the first records I played on my new turntables, was Jurassic 5’s self titled debut LP.

This album changed the way I listened to hip hop. I had heard this approach to melody and cohesion in raps, in the early 80s with Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, but never like this. I instantly became a J-5 fan.

Well as you can see from the intro of this video, NuMark and Cut Chemist are no strangers to a good soul record. They pulled out a funky break from a great Ike Turner album entitled A Black Man’s Soul.

While on tour in the late 60’s with the Ike and Tina revue, Ike would pull musicians into studios around the nation to record a few instrumental jams. One of these cuts featured the great Billy Preston on piano. This funky funky funky jam was later sampled by J-5 for the above track.
