Have you touched it? The rich red velvety cover is like a vintage chair in your grandmother’s house. That is exactly what the physical album feels like.
Beach House is a Baltimore native duo, Victoria Legrand and Alex Scally.
“Depression Cherry” is Beach House’s 5th studio album. This release followed the most recent release “Bloom” in 2012. “Depression Cherry” shows a return to simplicity within Beach House’s song structure, melody and generally the album has far less instrumentation.
More subtle, drone guitar licks rule the album, contrary to polished and bright licks that carried most songs in “Bloom.” More natural aspects have been added into “Depression Cherry.” The drums are not a primary focus and fall into a minuscule role by having a electronic vibe. While synths and organs pick up the main aspect within the album, guitar kicked up some mud to create a more prevalent drone and lo-fi sound on “Depression Cherry.”
“With the growing success of “Teen Dream” and “Bloom” the larger stages and bigger rooms naturally drove us towards a louder, more aggressive place; a place father from our natural tendencies. Here, we continue to let ourselves evolve while fully ignoring the commercial context in which we exist.”
Beach House is a dream world. While listening I get put into a trance. It’s a figment of my imagination where I ponder what I’m doing. It’s a journey, lyrically, with two people. I image walking on the beach, somewhat gloomy, where thought and picture is so lucid it’s almost real. But once the music is done, everything is gone.
Beach House literally sounds so bright and perfect; every note is just a good feeling in your heart.
In my opinion, Beach House is so perfect on every record. Yet every record is unique but changed ever so slightly so they keep to their unique indie-pop sound. Beach House from the start has molded indie and continues to do so. “Depression Cherry” is just another stage within Beach House existence.
Monday September 21st Beach House will be coming to the Pabst Theater in Milwaukee.
