Marquette's Radio Roulette will be a can't-miss battle of Milwaukee music

Bug Moment / Spider Creek / Social Cig / Facebook

For years, Marquette's Battle of the Bands functioned as any good college rock showcase should: in the underground, dimly lit back room of the university's Union Sports Annex.

While its roots remain in place, Marquette Radio re-branded the show this year, now calling it Radio Roulette as a measure to incorporate not just bands, but artists of all genres.

This year's all-Milwaukee lineup is true to the new name, featuring a mix of established names and up-and-comers. There's Social Cig and Bug Moment, both veterans of the 88Nine playlist and Milwaukee music scene. A more recent addition to the 88Nine and HYFIN mix, Spider Creek, will surely be a title favorite. Hip-hop artist Duwayne, alt-popper Micah Emrich and bedroom-pop singer Cleopatra Hoze round out the card of contenders.

On the line is the opportunity to open at the Marquette University spring concert for a national performing artist. Their fate lies in the hands of a panel of music industry judges, including 88Nine Music Director Erin Wolf.

Radio Roulette takes place at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 17, and is free to attend, although there is an option on the event webpage to reserve a spot in advance. Given the lineup, that might not be a bad idea.
